General Information

The Bachelor of Social Science (Extended major in Youth Work Major) is a three year fulltime course of study (or part-time equivalent). It is intended to provide students with a broad set of skills and understandings which are relevant to a wide number of ministry and professional outcomes in contexts such as welfare-oriented settings which cater to the needs of young people, and various areas of youth ministry, including school chaplaincy.

Please note that certain units can be completed oncampus only, in either Internal or Intensive modes (as offered). Please contact the School of Social Sciences Administration Office for further details.

Professional Recognition

Course Structure

BACHELOR OF SOCIAL SCIENCE (EXTENDED MAJOR IN YOUTH WORK) (SS11)

Students in the Bachelor of Social Science (Extended Major in Youth Work) complete a program of Core units, an Extended Major and Elective units, as follows:

Course Structure
Core units - 90 credit points (the unit SO252 Culturally Sensitive and Inclusive Practice may be counted towards the extended major
Extended Major - 120 credit points in Youth Work
Elective units - 40 credit points from one or more other fields
Total - 240 credit points

Students choose either a Youth Ministry focus or a Youth Welfare focus for their practicum units.

The Diploma of Social Science consists of Core units and Elective units. CHC provides sample unit outlines for each unit offered in this course. Core Units

The Core units consist of Professional Studies units and Christian Studies units. The Professional Studies units develop skills in academic and professional communication, and foundational perspectives and approaches in the Social Sciences. The Christian Studies units provide the foundational Christian worldview that underlies the course, in particular giving expression to CHC's fundamental commitment to constructive engagement and integration between Christian perspectives and social and cultural issues.
